Behind The Lens

Location

I am only 16 so a fancy studio isn't a luxury i have. Instead a lot of the pictures i take are taken in my backyard like this one, or in my house against a white sheet.

Time

Around 3 PM. I waited all week for the sun to come out so i could take this picture. I really needed the sun to be bright and high in the sky.

Lighting

Lighting is a photographers best friend. Without the sun helping me to create shadows, the picture would of just been a flat and normal portrait. Shadow give pictures personality because every shadow is different and has different effects on different pictures.

Equipment

I like to think of myself as an amish photographer. I don't need fancy lens and expensive cameras to create a beautiful picture. For this picture i used my digital camera, my best friend, and a metal Kleenex box to create the shadows.

Inspiration

My grandma was a collector of jewelry and metals. When she died she left my family with chests full of antique jewelry and strange items. I enjoy using these things in my pictures. In this case, i used her metal Kleenex box. Shadows have also fascinated me. I could create a whole collage of just shadows and their beauty. They are always different, some long and mysterious and others whimsical and fun in their patterns.

Editing

Originally the picture was in color but i didn't like the white shadows against my friends pale skin. I wanted more of a contrasts. I always have preferred black and white compositions because i think they are more beautiful and i have yet to see something look bad in black and white. I just changed the color and then decreased the exposer on Lightroom to make the picture darker and almost mysterious.

In my camera bag

I like to think of myself as an amish or pioneer photographer. I only have what I need and nothing more. I don't have fancy lens or filters. I like to keep my camera simple and use my skill as a creative person to make the photograph more interesting. I always keep my camera, the lens it came with, and an entra SD card.

Feedback

The sun is always a photographers best friend. Its cheap and constant. Also remember that you don't need to be a professional photographer to take pictures.Try looking around your house for things that can cast great shadows or have interesting colors. A great photographer is a creative photographer, be resourceful and use what you are given.
