Very nicely taken and composed Vicki. This guy reminds me of the guitarist `Slash` from `Guns & Roses`. Maybe that's who he has based his look on! Paul.

Thanks Paul! The look of Slash was definitely what he was going for. The band he was playing with is a Guns N Roses Tribute band. :)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the House of Blues in Orlando, FL

Time

The photo was taken at night during a rock concert with Appetite For Destruction: The Ultimate Tribute to Guns 'N Roses

Lighting

The overall lighting during this show was on the darker side. During one of the songs, Zach the guitar player, hopped up on a speaker at the side of the stage which was relatively dark. There was a faint spot coming in from the side with just enough light to highlight him playing in the shadows.

Equipment

When I shoot concerts I always have my Canon 5D Mark II, a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8, and plenty of cards.

Inspiration

Everything about concert photography inspires me actually. I love the fast pace and the music. I love the challenge of getting just the right shot and I find capturing the energy and raw emotion on stage to be very exciting.

Editing

I did reduce the noise and adjust the levels to reduce some background distractions. I wanted the main focus to be on Zach. I also removed the little bit of color that was visible in the stage curtain since I felt the B&W makes the photo more dramatic.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Canon 5D Mark II, a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8, a Speedlite 430EX II, and plenty of cards. I have other lenses that I only take with me when they are needed.

Feedback

When shooting concert photography always shoot in RAW and clean up your photos after. Use the lowest f-stop possible and adjust your shutter speed and ISO as needed. The faster your shutter speed the better so you can freeze the action and if the lighting levels are low, don't be afraid to bump up the ISO. It can sometimes be a game of trial and error due to the fact that the lighting for every show is different. Aside from figuring out which settings will be best for the lighting of the night, try to anticipate the moves and mannerisms of the band members. It goes a long way in getting just the right shot.
