Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Piha beach, Auckland, New Zealand. Me and my friend decided to have a quick swim after work. Luckily I had my camera with me!

Time

This photo was taken at that magical hour of the day when sun setts down, when shadows grow longer adding contrast and drama.

Lighting

You can't go wrong shooting at sunset. Subjects look sharper, shadows grow longer allowing to take more dramatic shots with more contrast. Truly amazing time of the day!

Equipment

This was shot using my good old Nikon camera that has been with me for a long time now. Lens used is Tamron 28-75mm, f\2.8. No flash or tripod were used.

Inspiration

This photo actually wasn't a planned one. My friend and I were just having fun at the beach. We were fooling around, running up and down the beach, towards the waves and back. At some point Madonna's song "Material girl" came up on the radio and my friend started to dance. Her moves were so cool I couldn't resist and started to take photos of her. Hundreds of photos in fact trying to capture her dance in the photos. This is how this shot was born.

Editing

Barely any post-processing was done to the photo. Coloured photo was turned into black & white to accentuate viewer's attention on the person in the photo.

In my camera bag

I always take Tamron 28-75mm lens with me, polarizing filter, and a set of magnifying filters as macro photography is my guilty pleasure.

Feedback

Piha beach is a unique combination of black volcanic sand and wild ocean waters. It attracts a lot of photographers but one needs to remember that like most of New Zealand beaches Piha beach is tide-dominated. So my advice would be to check if the tide is high or low before heading out for a photo shoot. I'd also recommend to arrive early and of course be patient. Take lots of photos and stay inspired!
