This photo was taken in my home studio aka my living room. It is pretty tight but affordable.Time
This photo could have been taking at anytime of the day but it happened to be shot later in the evening which made killing the ambient light very easy.Lighting
I'm no lighting guru so the lighting for this was pretty simple. I had an alien bee 800 just above the camera pointing down at her. I placed a beauty dish with a sock over the light.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Nikon D610, Nikon 50mm f1.4@ f8.0. I was setup on a Manfrotto Tripod. I used one Alien Bee 800 with the Beauty Dish and sock. The light was supported by a C-stand and some sand bags.Inspiration
Our model, Cynthia, came over to help create a fine art style photo I had in mind. After shooting a few of the concepts I had thought up, I asked Cynthia if I could try some head shots. She had long beautiful red hair (however the "red" in this photo is photoshopped). Then I asked my wife to throw locks of Cynthia's hair up in the air. I made sure to capture several pictures and then saw what I could do in post.Editing
This photo is all post-production. Multiple shots were taken of Cynthia's hair being thrown all about. Then a few pictures were taken of Cynthia making different facial expression. All of the pictures were imported into photoshop. I basically put a mask on all of them and slowly started painting in the locks of hair I wanted to use. Once I got the hair to look the way I hoped it would, I changed the color of her naturally red hair. I hadn't planned on changing the color of her hair; especially since it looked so gorgeous with the strobe lighting. However, as I was editing the picture, I felt like I should try stuff I don't normally do. I did a little skin clean up but not too heavy; I wanted it to look like a fashion shot but still have her feel like it was her. Couple curves and level adjustments and that's the imageIn my camera bag
My bag usually has my camera which is a Nikon D610. My lenses Nikon 24mm f2.8, Nikon 50mm f1.4, Nikon 105mm f2.8, and Nikon 80-200mm f2.8. I have a Nikon SB-600 and SB-900. That is what I carry in my bag along with some extra batteries and memory cards.Feedback
If your going to shoot something like this you definitely want a tripod it will make life a lot easier in post. Either then that don't be scared to try different stuff.
