Location
This photo was shot in my living room. I don't have the luxury of a studio so the living room usually gets rearranged for photos.Time
The time of day was nothing special. It was night time.Lighting
The lighting was a single AB800 with a beauty dish on it. It was above Darwin's head parallel with the ground and a bit ahead of him. He's a big chicken and was really nervous with the light just over his head so he kept moving in and out of it but I was finally able to catch him at the right time to get the dramatic look I was going for.Equipment
I used a Nikon D300 1/250 iso 160, with just the kit lens 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 @42mm f8, Alien Bee 800 with a beauty dish trigger by Paul C. Buff Cyber SyncInspiration
This photo was unplanned. My brother and fiance surprised us on my sons birthday by coming to visit. It was totally unexpected due to the fact the live 8 hours away. They happen to bring their beautiful red retriever Darwin up for the ride. After the party had died down for my little guy we were all sitting around talking and I thought I would try taking some pics of him.Editing
Post processing was photoshop and lightroom. I used photoshop to clean up the picture and fade the background to black. I did a little dodging and burning and added a little boarder. The original shot was in color to show of his copper color but after fooling around in lightroom with the black and white tab the final result was had.In my camera bag
I now away days I have a Nikon D610 for a body. Lenses include 24mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4 and 105mm F2.8 all Nikkor lenses. I have a Nikon SB600 and SB900 and that's all stuffed in a LOWEPRO Mini Trekker AW.Feedback
I don't really have any advice on capturing a similar picture but I will say that your odds increase on capturing the picture you want the more you shoot.
