Dated from the mid-16th century not long after Henry VIII had started to dissolve the monasteries the Castle was built as a strong hold against attacks from Scotland. when James I accended to the English throne the danger from Scotland had gone. In 1901 the Castle was bought by Edward Hudson who inturn had the Castle renovated as a domestic dwelling-retreat by an architect of the name Sir Edwin Lutyens, Lutyens art & craft style is still on show today.
