Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while visiting the famous Qutub Minar in Delhi. As I grew up in Delhi, I have been to Qutub Minar numerous times. However, this visit was to show a friend around.

Time

It was a hazy day typical of Delhi's autumn, as result there were no unpleasant shadows.

Lighting

As I said though it was hazy, the sun was behind me when I took the picture. The part of wall in foreground as well as the Qutub Minar got exposed correctly without blowing the highlights.

Equipment

This was shot on Nikon D90 with 18-105 kit lens and handheld.

Inspiration

Qutub Minar being one of the major attraction of Delhi have been shot from all possible angles. As I was not visiting it first time, there was no impulse to take snapshot at the first possible opportunity. Instead, we were roaming around taking in the grandeur of place. Then I passed through this spot where the Qutub Minar is framed by part of wall with broken arch and I thought this is something new!

Editing

The post processing was minimal just to sharpen the picture and boost the colors which was lost due to hazy light.

In my camera bag

I knew that bags etc. is not allowed in the premises by the Security personnel. Hence, I did not carry my usual camera bag. Instead I just tossed the camera in daypack. Usually I carry 2-3 lenses in my camera bag, my D90, Circular Polarizing filter, lens cleaning kit, spare battery, spare memory cards and tripod, if I need one.

Feedback

Like any tourist attraction, it is difficult to avoid people in your picture. However if one spends some time to scout around, then possibility of taking unique photo increases. Sometimes you have to wait for group of people to move and then take the photo before the next group comes. Do not feel pressurized to take the picture just because everyone else is doing the same.
