Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the butterfly house at Bristol Zoo. It was just a random day out and my first time trying to photograph animal subjects.

Time

It was towards the end of the day, the weather was clear from what I remember so there was a lot of nice natural light.

Lighting

The walls of the building were made of a white translucent plastic to keep all the heat in, It also acted like a massive softbox which helped remove any harsh shadows cast by the sun, letting the image feel quite soft...

Equipment

Just my trusty Canon 500d with a Canon 24-70L f/2.8

Inspiration

It was part of a challenge for myself to try and get out of my comfort zone and photograph something new. Also with the restrictions of the glass / cage enclosures of the animals it provided that little extra challenge to get a good shot.

Editing

Yeh, it was mainly adding a vignette to the image. softening it around the edges, sharpening it in the center to try and draw the eye to the subject. I also added a bit of subtle lens distortion and curves to increase the contrast and warm up the image a tad whilst overlaying some grain to further the warm and natural feel.

In my camera bag

Mostly just my camera (550d) and my 24-70. Sometimes if I'm going out for something specific I'll throw my LED panel light in and my tripod (nothing special, just a cheap one off amazon with a fluid head that weighs a tonne!).

Feedback

The answer to this is pretty much patience... You might be lucky and get a cracking shot on your first attempt, or it could take you 50. Just keep snapping :) The best chance to capture something like this would probably be in an enclosure where there is a concentrated population to stack the odds in your favour!
