Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Lofoten Island, Norway. we hadnt had great weather, very little snow, but made the decision to head out for sunrise, on the way towards our sunrise location we got caught by the traffic works (and its really slow over there!) so we pulled in here as the morning light was lighting up the buildings and creating a great light.

Time

this was taken first thing in the morning, we werent able to make our location before the sun came up but the light was diffused and created lovely morning glow.

Lighting

it was great side lighting, the buildings really came alive with the sun rising from the side of the scene, the weather was cold so we had amazing reflections.

Equipment

canon 1dx with 17-40mm f4, nd filter to hold back the light slightly but not too much to stop the reflections as this is what i really wanted to capture.

Inspiration

the buildings and surrounding mountains really work well together, the still morning, cold frost and overnight snow meant the reflections were super!, there was just enough cloud in the sky to make this scene work for me.

Editing

this image has had some post processing done, highlights darkened, contrast slightly added and a grad filter in lightroom but that is all.

In my camera bag

my favourite piece of kit is my canon 1dx, this is awesome, it captures great detail and is fantastic at night photography so locations such as this its just ideal! i have a back up body which is a canon 6d, also great, great for being lighter! lens, 17-40 f4 used all the time, great lightweight lens, 24-105 f4, another great companion, works well for a bit of a zoom, 70-200mm f2.8 - wow this lens is just stunning, super super sharp (just bit heavy though!) and a more recent adition of 28mm f1.8, great compact night lens. added to all this is my Lee filters (wouldnt go anywhere without these) and cable release, spare batteries, lens cloths, memory cards, hat and gloves, and of course some businesscards! all this compacted into my new addition F-Stop bag!!

Feedback

yes, be prepared for light changing, be prepared to change plans at last minute to capture the light change and not just sit back and think i should of shot that!!
