I like this photo. The cow is probably mooing for someone to come milk her.

I like this because I find it hard to get something else interesting going on in a rainbow photo. You did. The cow seems excited about the rainbow too.

Behind The Lens

Location

I captured this image just fifty feet beyond my front door, in the cow pasture where my Jersey milk cow and her calf were grazing. Most of my images are made within twenty miles or so of my home in Council, Idaho. It is a place unlike any other - a time warp of mountain, lake, valley and canyon.

Time

This photo was taken shortly before sunset in mid August.

Lighting

Just moments after a brief summer rain shower the pasture was flooded with an ethereal glow as the setting sun flashed through the skidding clouds. Less than sixty seconds after I tripped the shutter the rainbow was gone and the cloud cover killed the light. I worked quickly, setting my tripod close enough to frame the shot without disturbing the mama cow and her calf. A second rainbow briefly appeared and faded, but the cows did not cooperate and that shot wasn't memorable.

Equipment

I made this image with an Olympus OM-D E-M5 body and an Olympus Digital Zuiko SWD 12-60mm zoom at F7.1 and 12mm, using a shutter release, and a Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

There is a brief time at the end of a rain shower when the air is so still and the light is glowing, that there is a certainty of a rainbow appearing. It compels me to grab my camera bag and wait. The challenge is always finding the image, and the cows were in the perfect spot. Luck favors the prepared, and I was ready when she raised her head to moo, turning a nice shot into a perfect one.

Editing

I shot in RAW and post-processed the image in Lightroom 4, applying a gradient filter to lighten the foreground and adding clarity and contrast to the sky. Saturation was raised only slightly to compensate for the dim lighting and color balance was left untouched.

In my camera bag

I pack a heavy bag, or I should say two bags. My main kit is an Olympus O-MD E-M1 body with Zuiko 12-60 and 50-200 SWD zooms. These are hands down the finest zooms I have ever used, and work well on the E-M1 micro four-thirds body. Also I carry the Zuiko 35mm 3.8 macro, Zuiko 25mm 2.8, 15mm bodycap lens, and a collection of Samyang primes in 8mm 3.8, 14mm 2.8, 24mm 1.4, 85mm 1.4. Also in my bag is an EC-20 teleconverter, Olympus E-3 body and an Olympus TG-4 Tough camera. My second bag contains an Olympus E-M5 body and a collection of excellent old Olympus Zuiko OM mount primes ranging from 24mm to 500mm mirror. I also pack a Metabones Speedbooster to use with the old Zuiko OM 55mm f1.2, giving me an equivalent effective 70mm f0.95

Feedback

Understanding light is the most important thing. If you can see a great lighting situation developing ahead of time, such as a spectacular sunset shaping up an hour before it happens, then you can be prepared to capture the truth of the moment when it arrives. There are rules of light that govern the production of rainbows and great sunsets, and it pays to learn where and when they will be produced. Then add in some good composition and the smile of good fortune, and you will capture something magical.
