The Common Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, also known as Eurasian Kingfisher or River Kingfisher, is a small kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.
This sparrow-sized bird has the typical short-tailed, large-headed kingfisher profile; it has blue upperparts, orange underparts and a long bill. It feeds mainly on fish, caught by diving, and has special visual adaptions to enable it to see prey under water. The glossy white eggs are laid in a nest at the end of a burrow in a riverbank.

Nice pic. I used to work on a boat named kingfisher. Never actually seen one though. Thanks to you I learned that that bird is full of eye catching colors. :)

Beautiful! Love the Kingfishers up here in N. Idaho- hard to catch, though. We found the riverbank nest that ie eye level with the road and just 15 feet away, and will be getting some amazing shots with the parents feeding the young bugs and small fish. Good job!

To me its one of the hardest birds to capture, they fly so fast and don't like to pose for you. This is a fantastic shot !!! Love it .

That is ONE beautiful bird! And an awesome shot! I love Kingfishers! They're so cool to watch when they dive bomb into a water filled ditch to catch fish.

Yeah! The are cool birds and incredible fast! I have a few "diving" images, but they are not perfect because of the speed and my camera is a bit to slow!
