Location
This was taken in Vermont, my family and I were camping at one of our favorite spots, I was lucky enough to get this shot. I am self taught and still have so much to learn and love it when I try new things and they work.Time
It was so cold that morning as it often is in the valley's of Vermont, and we were camping along Quechee Gorge and the sun had just come up through the trees. I was walking on the ridge line trying to find the best spot to capture this photo which was hard to do since the fog was starting to roll and move. But it was so worth it, it was taking around 7:30, which is early for fall in the green mountains, and it was September.Lighting
I wanted all natural light as my flash really drowned out the fog, and highlighted the trees to much. But at the same time the direct sun also was too bright and the fog was not visable. So I wandered until I found the perfect tree to do both shade the direct sunlight but still give me enough to give the beautiful ray effect.Equipment
I used my canon 40D, on the no flash setting and did my best to hold still as I had no tripod with me.Inspiration
I always love watching fog, whether its at the beach or in the valleys, or just in my backyard. There is always such a mysterious beauty about it, so when I woke that morning and was watching it through the trees it was so beautiful and haunting, but it was even better when the sun came through the trees and hit a patch. So I tried to give that beauty to my photo, while using natural light. It took a few tries and a little patience but it was well worth it.Editing
I try really hard not to process my photos at all, mostly because I haven't mastered that talent yet, and because I love the natural quality of my work.In my camera bag
I always carry my canon 40d body with a basic lens because I love how that camera handles and the timer setting is awesome. I also take my canon Rebel T5i I love this camera and its my go to, I attach to it my favorite lens Ultrasonic 28mm-200mm. This lens can do up close and far away so its versatile in what I need. I have also a canon efs 18mm-55mm with auto stabilizer for my video needs, since this camera also does video. I love both of these so much that I never leave home without them. I also make sure to pack extra batteries, and a lens cloth ocean photos require one at least and I never know where I will end up.Feedback
I love trying these shots anywhere there are trees, or bushes, even something like a lamppost. I often find however that it does work best with trees, and I also stay with black and white, or sepia setting since they give the best result. Take your time it is so worth it even if you take a ton of pictures when you get the "one" it just makes it all worth while. The beach is also a great place to get fog shots, while it rolls through the trees, and along the banks, that's what makes these so fun to try and capture.
