Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a wooded area near where I live. We went there for a pre wedding photo shoot a month before they got married. We also went back on the couples wedding day.

Time

The photo was taken on an evening around 6.30pm. I remember the light was absolutely beautiful as the sun was setting, and the way it was falling in to the trees was stunning, I knew it was an opportunity that I shouldn't miss, so I planted the couple right in the middle of the light.

Lighting

I could see from the sunlight coming through the trees that there would be a lot of contrast in the image, and made the decision there and then that I would convert it to black and white in post processing. I tried to position the couple in the sunlight as much as possible, so that they would stand out from the dark background behind them.

Equipment

This was shot on my 5D mkii, no flash was used.

Inspiration

I love images with contrast, like really love them. I never really get the chance to try them out though, so this was a new experience for me to try my hand at. I also positioned both people facing the same way as I wanted the light to fall on them evenly, rather than one of them being covered in shadows. This was to show the love and interaction between them both too, which was what the whole engagement shoot was about!

Editing

My post processing happens in Lightroom. I converted to black and white, dropped the shadows and blacks and raised the highlights until I was happy with the result, in this case that was a "contrasty image".

In my camera bag

I usually carry my 5d mkii, a 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm. Flash gun and wireless triggers, and lots of spares cards and batteries. Although I have just bought a shiny new 5D mkiii as my main body for weddings!

Feedback

Try and find a couple that are really happy to get comfy in front of the camera, and in front of other peoples if needs be. There was passers by looking on at us for this shot. Try and make them forget you're even there, I use word games and get them interacting with each other, and they usually forget I'm even there! I never do "look at the camera" poses. Finally, find nice light! Pick a time of day when the sun is low, and you will be spoilt with glorious light falling all over you're couple. Swoon....
