Location
The picture was taken in Greece, Halkidiki in September 2014.Time
It was about 19:30 at a crowded beach in Toroni, Sithonia. I had to cease the moment when there were no people in the background. I was lying in the sand, shooting with the camera handheld, manual mode, manual focus in continuous high speed shutter. My purpose was to create the star shaped effect using the highest possible f-number, which entered a geometric dialogue with the pattern of the hair. I pushed the limits of my shutter speed to freeze motion. It took me about 200 shots to get the hair pattern I wanted.Lighting
I was shooting against the sun in order to create star-shaped silhouette of model's hair, letting the light shines through the water droplets.Equipment
I used Nikon D7100 with Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens. No flash, no tripod.Inspiration
I have seen a lot of photos with hair motion and water splashes, and I was really keen on practicing that kind of shots. My inspiration was to play with hair, sun and water creating interplay between the rays and the radial motion.Editing
I used Photoshop and LiteRoom to loose detail in the silhouette, to reduce the noise, due to the high ISO value and to make minor color corrections, creating a subtle silver feel for the water. There was of course some selective sharpening and local contrast adjustments. In my camera bag
I usually go out with one camera and two lenses. When on assignment I rely on tripod, second body and speed lights depending on the task. When shooting for fun and on vacation, I try to reduce the weight and be more flexible.Feedback
When shooting on sandy beach always bring with you some cleaning gear, because your lens is getting dirty really quick. Also its better to have someone with you keeping an eye on the rest of your equipment because on tourist locations with a lot of people there are plenty of things that can happen.
