Location
I was on holiday in New York for a week,Time
We planned it so we arrived at the top of the Rockefeller Tower a little before the sun set so that we could get some shot while it was still light and then start to take some more as it got darker. obviously this became more and more challenging as you are not allowed to use tripods.Lighting
The light was still reasonably good and the cloud formation over the Empire State Building was very impressive which is what makes this photo so striking.Equipment
Believe it or not this was taken on a Nikon bridge camera some years ago now, before I got a decent DSLR , as I said the camera was hand held although I did brace my hands and the camera against the building to steady itInspiration
The view from the top of the rock is obviously quite an iconic one with the Empire State building and most of lower Manhattan in the shot, right out to the Statue of Liberty. but the cloud formation just mead this a shot worth taking .Editing
There is ab bit of haze reduction, some contrast adjustment and just general exposure and sharpness adjustments..In my camera bag
When this was taken I only had a Nikon bridge camera, but now I have a Canon 7D Mkii and battery grip, a Canon 70-300L IS, a Canon 24-105L IS , Sigma 150-600C and 1.4 converter. Canon 580EX flash unit. and I have a Manfrotto 190Go tripod. I obviously don't carry everything, all the time, I tend to take out only what I need for the type of photography I am doing, who wants to carry a Sigma 150-600C around or a flash gun if you know you are not going to use them .Feedback
Get there earlier than you expect to be taking the shots so that you can sort out where to shoot from, what sort of settings, lenses you are going to need and get set up.
