Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a rundown laundromat in southern Oregon. I was deliberate in choosing this place to wash my sleeping bags, so that I could take some pictures while I waited, there were a lot of good shots that came out on this particular day.

Time

If I recall correctly, I took this sometime late in the morning. I was hoping to also get some interesting faces from other people, but it was pretty dead that morning.

Lighting

Not really much to tell about lighting. I relied upon the fluorescent light of the laundromat, that kind of light worked best for everything here, it really captured the mood of the place as a whole.

Equipment

This was shot with a little Nikon D5100 with a Nikon 30mm at f/1.8

Inspiration

Well, like I mentioned before, I was deliberate in choosing the location. However, I was originally inspired to go here because the particular lens I used was new to me and and wanted to do something creative with it, or shoot some interesting faces with it...turned out there where not many people there, so I just looked around for what looked interesting.

Editing

There was minimal editing with this one, because I already had a mood or a "feel" to it, but I did increase the contrast a bit, and upped the saturation a tiny bit.

In my camera bag

These days it's a Sony NEX 6. I love the portability of this little camera, but I do plan on getting the A7R. For lenses, I have a 16-50mm f/3.5, Sigma 30mm f/2.8, Nikon 50mm f1.8 and my iPhone 5s is always at the ready as well.

Feedback

Photography is awesome because it helps you to look at the world differently. I see things completely different than I did before I got into photography. There are so many places around us that have character or a feel, where you can really get creative. Just open up your eyes to these places, leave no stone unturned. A shallow depth of field works best for these up close shots.
