Location
This photo was taken in Brussels, Belgium. Visiting the local Flea market.Time
The photo was taken in the middle of the day.Lighting
It was a cloudy day which actually worked out very well. The light was more soft, less intense which helped with a nice even exposure without burned out whites.Equipment
I used my back up body (smaller Nikon D5100) with a basic walk around lens, Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED. No tripod no flash. ISO 400, Aperture f4.5, speed 1/500, auto white balance, RAW, Focal length 40mm (60mm on 35mm).Inspiration
It was an instant decision. The natural composition of the books was screaming to be photographed. I fell in love with the old look of the books. Something once so valuable was just piled up without anyones attention.Editing
As a first step I decided to process this picture as a single HDR image. However I wasted a more rustic look so I decided to blend the HDR with the pure image with around 70% opacity for more realistic look(softening the HDR). After developing this new blend I took the picture to the final editor for cropping and finishing exposure touches. In my camera bag
For a general walk around set I usually pack my Nikon D5100 with a 18-105mm and 35mm f1.8 lens. However for a more enthusiastic walks, or work assignment I love the combination of D7000 with a Tokina 100mm macro f2.8 and D5100 with a 35mm f1.8 lens. Spare batteries, SD cards, micro fibre cloth and a Nikon SB910 flash are always packed as well. For special needs I use the Sigma 10-20mm lens.Feedback
Keep your eyes open together with your mind. Rather than trying to capture pure objects, look for the sentimental value that could possibly underline your composition. During the post production try to find the balance between supporting the subject and stylising it.
