I had a moment of what can only be described as random artistic inspiration this past weekend and decided to look outside the box with a self portrait project. With a little flower and my wife with a killer right arm we had some fun.

This photo was taken at my home studio in Mesa, Arizona.Time
This was taken on a Saturday morning just after breakfast. I always get these random thoughts of inspirations at the oddest moments. Still not sure what made me think of this one back in February 2013.Lighting
I am definetly a big fan of one light setups and wanted to use that here. I wanted to create that dramatic light while capturing the motion of the flour once it hit my face. I used a Canon 430EX II with a white umbrella diffusor to the left of the camera.Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 5DMII camera body with a Canon 24-70mm 2.8 L lens (at 50mm). Canon 430EX II with a white umbrella diffusor for the lighting and a Vuello wireless introvalometer to trigger the camera.Inspiration
I had a moment of what can only be described as random artistic inspiration. I'm not sure where half my ideas come from and trust me it drives my wife nuts too. Overall my idea to do creative self portraits came from photographer Bob Carey. I had a job as a graphic designer/photographer and we had some of his work on our walls and it was just amazing and out of the box. He was famous for his pink tutu project which is worth a look. http://www.bobcarey.comEditing
Didn't do a whole lot in post for this image. Just boosted the clarity and sharpness a bit.In my camera bag
I typically have two Canon 5DMII camera bodies with my Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art and Canon 100mm 2.8L lenses. I'm a big fan of primes so depending if i'm doing a portrait or landscape shot I can quickly switch between the lenses without having to take the time to switch out a lens. I especially find this helpful when you are at a time crunch as light starts to fade away at sunset. I also have a couple of wireless triggers for time-lapsing when I am out storm chasing. I try to keep it simple and not overcomplicate things. I use that strategy with my gear and my photography.Feedback
Look outside the box and had some fun. Don't be afraid to get dirty or humiliate yourself to get the shot. Of course using something like flour it's best to do it somewhere it's easy to clean up because it will get everywhere. If I had to do this again I would recommend some ear plugs. I took a handful of flour right to my ear; that was fun to dig out.
