Behind The Lens

Location

Las Vegas, NV on the Las Vegas Strip (Las Vegas Blvd)

Time

It was probably around 6 or 7pm. I occasionally “hit the strip” to see what’s going on and "see what I can see”.

Lighting

Lighting is always important, after all that’s what allows us to make photographs. In this instance it was right around sunset. I’m not a huge believer of you can only shoot during the golden hours because it all depends on what you as a photographer are looking for. In this case however it worked out pretty well.

Equipment

I was using a Canon 70D and if I had to guess I was using the kit 55-250. I don’t own a “quality” all in one lens but find that the zoom capability seems to fit me well.

Inspiration

The dancers were amazing. Spinning jumping and flipping around in what seemed to be a sheer defiance of gravity itself. I felt compelled to capture a moment of that.

Editing

I didn’t do much post processing here, some basic lighting adjustments in LightRoom was all I did. I think the image captures the moment well and I didn’t want to interfere with that.

In my camera bag

When I’m shooting in the streets there is no bag. I always stick to what Jay Maisel said, “One camera, one lens”. It takes all the guess work out, forces me to use what I have and allows me more time to see what’s around me.

Feedback

My best advice really isn’t mine at all but I strongly agree with Jay Maisel on the One Camera one lens position. In an age of gear availability it’s easy to want to bring a bunch of lenses and maybe even a couple cameras. Don’t do it, you’ll spend all your time focusing on your gear instead of what’s going on around you. My personal advice is to allow your trips to the street to take over. Be completely involved in the moment and leave all your other thoughts at home. Bills, work, relationships... if you’re too busy thinking about your personal life you will without a doubt miss what’s happening right in front of you.
