I actually shot this photo right out of my car window.Time
This photo was shot during the evening.Lighting
Natural lighting was everything with this photo.Equipment
I used my Nikon D3100 camera and a 55mm lens.Inspiration
I have always loved nature photos but I wanted to photograph something that was very special to me. My parents grew up on a farm and I grew up hearing the stories from my parents and grandparents. I wanted to photograph something that was a symbol of my roots and something that I cared about. Also, I love mountains.Editing
Yes, a few little secrets. In my camera bag
Right now in my main bag that I carry with me when I go out I have 1 Nikon D3100 camera (my main camera), one 18-55mm lens, and one Fujifilm camera that is about 7 years old but still takes pretty good photos. I also have a few extra memory cards, my battery charger, lens cloth, plastic ziplock bag (a special effect I use sometimes) and a few extra batteries. I have a lot more gear at home (two more large bags) but when I go out and shoot, I only take the bare essentials. I usually bring my tripod with me also.Feedback
I have had a lot of trial and error over the years. I have changed my photography technique a lot. With this photo, I threw the rule book out the window and only used it as a guideline and shot what I felt inside. I was on a photo journey more for myself as I was feeling down and felt like I wasn't photographing anything great. I wanted to do something that hit home with my roots and I did it. So my advice for people is to shoot something that means something to you in your soul. The best photographs are those that tell a story about something. For me, this tells a story of who I am and what I came from. When your heart is in the right place, the photo will evolve. The camera is just a box, a machine; a true photo comes from your heart and your soul. And for me, it came out of my car window.
