Location
I took this photo behind my dorm during my Junior year in college at UW-Oshkosh.Time
I was taking out the trash around 7:00pm and saw how beautiful the moon was coming through the clouds and the tree, so I ran back inside and grabbed my tripod, my dad's Pentax film camera (I was taking a film course at the time and thought it would be cool to try this shot with that camera) and my Nikon D80. The meter on the film camera never really liked to work, so I took this shot as a test shot to get my settings right since I only had a few shots left on my last roll of film. I was so glad that this shot turned out because the metal cable release I was using for the Pentax kept freezing (it was the end of November in Wisconsin) and I was afraid the five shots wouldn't turn out (they did end up turning out pretty close to perfect actually).Lighting
The only lighting that was used for this shot was the moon and any lampposts that may have been nearby. I had my ISO at 800 and my exposure was 1.6 seconds with a 2.8 f-stop.Equipment
This image was made using my Nikon D80, an 80-200mm lens at f2.8, and a tripod (I don't have that tripod anymore so I can't remember the brand).Inspiration
I've always been kind of fascinated by the moon, who hasn't at some point in their life? When I saw how the moon was lighting up the clouds, tree, and everything in the area, I just needed to take a shot of it.Editing
At that point in my photography career, I really didn't know much about post-processing. I always kind of kept everything really simple and in-camera, mostly because I typically shot sports for the most part. It was somewhat windy that night though, and the branches were swaying a bit, so I went in and cloned out some of the ghosting from that. I didn't do it to every branch though, so if you look for it you can definitely still see some there. There was also a flare from the moon on the tower that I removed. In my camera bag
What I pack in my bag kind of varies depending on what I'm going to shoot, but generally I have the same core pieces in my bag at all times. I pack my Nikon D750, I love the detail I can pull out of that when I'm shooting a concert or something that has pretty poor lighting, and my Nikon 60mm, 24-120mm, and 80-200mm lenses. The 60mm is probably my favorite lens, I love the macro shots I can get with it and the way it completely blows out the background.Feedback
There is so much happening around us all of the time, even when you're taking out the garbage. Keep an eye out wherever you are for photo opportunities and try to keep a camera nearby, the best camera is the one you have with you.
