Behind The Lens

Location

We took this at The Salton Sea, California

Time

We took this photo in Summer, it was 105° around 1pm.

Lighting

We only used our flash at full power, luckily the sun was faces behind her so the model didn't have to squint. Attached a small soft box to make our light source larger.

Equipment

Handheld our Nikon D600 with our 50mm 1.4, it was a basic setup because we didn,t want to carry a lot of gear to the location.

Inspiration

We hard the story about Salton Sea a while back and wanted to visit it. We wanted to show that life does magical things, that even a dead and toxic area, a small glimpse of life can survive.

Editing

We shot this in raw so we can get as much color and details. The dead tree trunk was shot first, then we had the model go as close as possible to the trunk and then we added the rose from our garden. We then edited it together in Photoshop, it took around 75 layers to get the final outcome.

In my camera bag

We are minimalist, so our equipment consist of a medium bag that carries: 50mm 1.4 Prime - that is our primary lens we use a lot. 24-70mm 2.8 - for our wide shots. Nikon SB800 flash 4 triggers. External battery - for our phones Battery pack - for our flash. Variable ND Filter 6 Stop ND filter lightweight light stand

Feedback

Our advice is to scout the location first, we had to use google map to find the perfect spot for this shot. Know the position of the sun so you can use it as your main light or your rim light, since we had a model we wanted the sun behind her. We also sketched our idea in paper, this helps a lot in your post-process so you know what things needs to be shot. Less time thinking of what to do when you get there and you have a plan to guide you. Do less manipulation in Photoshop, we try to get as much effects in camera. As we mentioned, we had the model go as close as possible so we didn't need to mask out all the details of the trunk.
