Location
This photo of the iconic Superstition Mountains (Arizona) was taken during the height of our Monsoon season here in the desert Southwest.Time
While waiting for an approaching late afternoon storm I kept an eye to the western horizon as the sun began to peek through the clouds.Lighting
A few months ago I was featured on the Weather Channel and was asked to pick my top five favorite images. This was my number one image. The dust storm in the background gave the appearance of a very shallow depth of field. The sunlight in the foreground provided a somewhat surreal appearance, providing an almost neon-like appearance of the cactus. The sunset on the dust storm was just the effect needed to produce this composition.Equipment

I have a passion to chase monsoonal storms here in the deserts of Arizona. Whether it be a 'haboob,' lightning, a cloudburst, or a rainbow, I'm always on the lookout for something unique. Depending upon the conditions and my mood I will either try to position myself in front of ... or behind the storm. Dramatic atmospheric conditions trip my trigger.Editing
My post-processing includes ... Camera RAW adjustments, Photoshop tonal correction, NIK Color Efex Pro, NIK Define, Photokit Sharpener, etc. Beyond that I edit for personal taste and inspiration. In my camera bag

Instances like these are miracles of timing. Familiarizing yourself with weather conditions in your area and keeping an eye to the sky while positioning yourself properly ahead of time will free you to compose for inspiration. Try to see something that most others will not see. Create an image that will tell a story and create a sense of awe and mystery.
