Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my childhood home in Abbeville, South Carolina.

Time

I'm pretty sure that it was around 4pm mid-November. I just loved how the light complemented the key features in the photo, such as the bow in her hair and the mirror.

Lighting

I thought that a brighter, yet softer light would be able to lend to the idea/focal point of the photograph. I did not want just one element to be so jarring that the others couldn't be seen equally, so I thought that this mode of lighting would equalize all of the elements in one pleasant photograph.

Equipment

I used a Canon T3i with a 50mm Rokinon lens.

Inspiration

I was struck with the idea of delicacy when the model was preparing for the shoot, and I thought that all of the elements happening in that moment such as the fabric of her leotard and the pastel colors could bring that idea to life in this candid moment.

Editing

I leveled out the lighting through Photoshop Elements 7.

In my camera bag

I always, always have my trusty Canon T3i + Canon 60mm lens. I usually photograph subjects close-range, so this lens is a vital tool.

Feedback

Composition and light are always key. Natural light is also great because in a way, it has the possibility to be more relatable to the viewer. As this photo was candid, my advice would be to always utilize the composition of a moment. Something mundane can be turned into something beautiful simply because of the way it was captured.
