Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a car show at Lake Tomahawk in Negley, Ohio.

Time

This photo was taken in late morning.

Lighting

The car was sitting close to the lake so I had to expose my camera accordingly to retain the car colors and details while considering the bright light coming from behind it from the open water/sky.

Equipment

While I occasionally use tripods, I prefer to hand hold my camera and did so for this photo.

Inspiration

I was just beginning to shoot professionally and trying to establish my business, Idyllic Images and Photography. This was a great way to meet people and hand out my business cards as I offered to take photos of the owner’s car at no charge and email the digital photos to them. Ultimately, I ended up getting a lot of print orders, three senior graduation sessions (my specialty) and a family photo session resulting from this day.

Editing

I replaced the sky as there was little color and no clouds in the original photo.

In my camera bag

Normally, I pack everything that I could need as a backup for what I plan to use on a shoot. I always take two cameras and two different lenses, extra batteries from my flashes and cameras, camera cards and case, a lens cloth, business cards, and two camera flashes. I would hate to be out on a shoot and have an equipment failure...and have my backup items just in case. This practice had served me well as it is always best to be prepared.

Feedback

Get out and meet people. You will be surprised how much fun you will have! If you enjoy photographing antique cars, people will love talking to you about their car and the shows and awards they have won!
