Behind The Lens

Location

At a wooded area near my home in Los Angeles.

Time

This was around noon, which I usually avoid, but this day was cloudy so it diffused the light beautifully.

Lighting

I generally let the sun do my lighting for me. I rarely feel the need to modify it.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D40 and the kit lens it came with, a 35-70mm zoom lens.

Inspiration

The fairytale The Armless Maiden was the inspiration for this. This is the moment when a magical bird restores the maiden's arms, making her whole again.

Editing

I used the face of my model, Aly Darling, from one frame, and her body and arms from another. I also added a little extra red ribbon from different frames. I played with the lights and colors, giving it a more golden color, and added some textures on top of everything.

In my camera bag

A Nikon D5100, a 50mm 1.8 lens, an old 35-70mm kit zoom lens, a lightweight, collapsible tripod, several cheap remote shutter releases and some snacks! You never know when your or your model's blood sugar might get low.

Feedback

Reading lesser-known fairytales often gives wonderful inspiration! Try checking out books from your local library or do an online search; there is a wealth of information available online! Telling stories, whether they're well known, obscure or completely made-up, can make your images stronger and more compelling!
