This mill built in the late 1800's provided compression to the mines in the area. The extremely high volume of snow this winter makes this a raging torrent of water that will slow down as the summer goes on.

Location
This photo was taken in a rural setting high in the mountains of Colorado in a location called Crystal Mill. To get there you go south on Highway 133 from Carbondale, Co for several miles to highway #3. That small rural road goes to Marble, Co. From there you need to take a 4 wheeler on the one lane rocky dirt road looking over cliffs to the river below and eating a lot of dust, following Crystal River to get to the site. You will need to stop and back up occasionally to let someone get by coming from the other direction. It takes close to 2 hours at a top speed of 3-4 MPH. A little farther on the road takes you to the ghost town of Crystal City. We hired a tour guide to take us to the site.Time
It was taken in mid afternoon in early July.Lighting
A bright and sunny day. The mill does get a lot of direct light.Equipment
This is an HDR image created with 3 bracketed shots using a tripod. It is a little tricky to get an HDR image with fast moving water.Inspiration
It is well know location in Colorado and I wanted to visit the site for some time.Editing
The photos were taken as RAW images and merged together using Photomatix Pro. I use Photoshop Elements 12 to clean up the image, crop and make minor adjustments. I then use Perfect Effects 8 for some sharpening, color adjustments, etc.In my camera bag
Canon Rebel T1, 18-135 telephoto lens, 18-55 lens.Feedback
Be willing to go to some difficult places to get find the images you are looking for. Think about what you are trying to accomplish with the photo and try many different settings and angles. You may be surprised at which one works the best when you get back to the computer to work with the photos. I walked around for different angles, and climbed down to the river level for some images.
