I remember the very first year that the "secret sunflower patch" was shared with me---I was mesmerized by it's intense vibrancy for what seemed like MILES and MILES! It is in fact acres and acres of sunflowers that a local man plants year after year for the birds to enjoy. A variety of shapes, sizes, shades of yellow and oranges and an abundance of seeds for our feathered friends that come to dine for weeks at a time. Dining doesn't last forever, though I wonder if in the life of a bird the experience seems ongoing? I know the sunflower plants seem ongoing to my eyes. My heart is refreshed with each year that I get to enjoy the unselfish act that this local man bestows upon the community of creatures who dine upon the harvest and to all of us who dine upon their beauty; temporary as it may be. Equally impactful as the act of planting-- is the sunflowers representation (for me). You see, my POPS lost his battle with ALS 5 years ago and it was during his struggle that I learned the SUNFLOWER is the flower chosen to represent Lou Gehrig's Disease. I often ponder the fact that we chose the home we did, surrounded by hundreds, thousands of corn fields--extremely rural. Down the road is this yearly mural of sunflowers glowing in their glory and I am boldly reminded of my father's strength and his laughter. A random act of choice? I wonder.
