Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture in the picturesque back alleys of downtown Regina. There aren't many great places to shoot in Regina, so it is not uncommon to see multiple wedding parties running around in the alleys during the summer. I spotted this cool brick wall as we were passing by and made the girls stop for one of our last group pictures.

Time

This was probably around 4 in the afternoon, we had already been to a couple of other locations, and we were almost on our way back to the limo.

Lighting

I can't take full credit for the lighting, this picture was solely lit by the sun. I had a bag full of reflectors and a flash that stayed in my camera bag all afternoon.

Equipment

All I used for this shot was my little Canon T2i with the 18-55 kit lense. I have since bought a few L series lenses, but you can still take great pictures straight out of the box, as they say your best camera is the one you have with you.

Inspiration

I wanted to do a photo where the women in the bridal party had lots of attitude, we drew some inspiration from the main picture for the movie "bridesmaids". I feel our bridesmaids pulled off the look perfectly! And they had lots of fun getting into character.

Editing

I always start in Lightroom and do most of the heavy lifting there, I then take the image in Photoshop and do the finishing touches. I used Nik Viveza quite a bit in this image, especially to make the colors pop and bring out the texture in the bricks. There may have been some element replacing.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon T2i (until I can afford a better camera), my 24-105 f4L is always on my camera, I also have my 70-200 f4L and Sigma 30mm f1.4 in there. I had 2 580exii's until I dropped one and it doesn't work now (have to send it away). 4 sets of AA rechargeable batteries and an extra camera battery all in a Lowepro flipside101.

Feedback

Take your camera off P or Auto, and go out and practice. I absolutely love Photoshop and post processing, do not be afraid to edit your pictures, Lightroom and Elements are both very powerful tools and both are rather inexpensive. My advice is go out and take lots of pictures and go and edit them, it is not time wasted if you are having fun and learning.
