You certainly get some impressive shots with your Fuji Dave. I use the HS30EXR but would struggle to get a result like this. Did you use a filter of any kind? Paul.

No filter on this shot Paul. The haze from the nearby forest fires took care of the otherwise blinding sunlight.

I'm sure your camera would have returned a very similar result had you been there at that time. I just dropped the EV to -2 to maintain detail in the sky. :)

Location
Near Revelstoke BC on my way east to Calgary.Time
I left the Okanagan valley before sunrise and encountered this amazing scene along the way.Lighting
There was a lot of smoke from nearby forest fires which created the magic of the full morning sun blazing its' way into a new day.Equipment
I resorted to my trusty Fuji Finepix F770EXR travel camera for this shot. The nice reach of the zoom and great image stabilization allowed me to frame and shoot this without using a tripod.Inspiration
I was heading east into the rising sun and was treated to quite a show thanks to the smoke from the still burning forest fires. I had a location in mind as I drove and fortunately for me the conditions were very good when I got there.Editing
I have currently just been using iPhoto for my edits and my main concern with this shot was to reduce the highlights a bit so as to retain the detail of the sun and the cloudy smoke. This great little pocket camera also shoots in RAW but I have not explored that feature yet. I wish I would have for this picture as I may have been able to extract even more colour and detail. In my camera bag
I normally pack my F770EXR compact travel camera for casual shooting, zoom and panorama shots. The Fuji W3 (3D camera) comes along for occasional photos and great video. A new novelty item is the GoPano attachment for my iPhone 4 which shoots viewer controlled 360 degree video (low on quality but high on fun). The main camera in the bag is still the Pentax K30 with Sigma 10-20 and Pentax 18-135 WR lenses. Seldom used tripod and flash usually ride in the vehicle. Neutral density filter is next on the list! :)Feedback
Keep a camera you are comfortable travelling with (or a smartphone with a good camera) on you or in your vehicle for those great moments in time. Even if it is not Nat Geo awesome, it is great for capturing those special memories that make up a lifetime. Moving up to a decent DSLR improves your image quality measurably and can still be easy to use if you don't mind starting out with the AUTO features and exploring the manual options as you begin to tailor your photos to your own style. Finding and getting used to an editing program opens up further options for fine tuning your work. Lots of decent programs out there to choose from, just use the web to find what suits you and start having fun! My favourite camera site for comparing camera features and keeping tabs on what is new is dpreview.com (I highly recommend them). :)
