Behind The Lens

Location

Near Wapta Falls in Yoho National Park (beautiful) British Columbia, Canada.

Time

This was a late evening shot as the sun was setting and casting its' last rays of light on the adjacent mountains.

Lighting

I reduced the EV by up to one stop to maintain the essence of the dimming light and keep more colour in the sky. The foreground was beginning to darken and I wanted that to be conveyed as well.

Equipment

This was taken with my Panasonic compact camera and hand held. The image stabilization works wonderfully to keep the images as sharp as the small sensor will allow. I have blown this one up to 24" by 36" and it looks surprisingly good. I have been very impressed with all of the Panasonic products I have used.

Inspiration

Anytime nature hands you a gift like this is as good a reason as any to stop and enjoy the moment. Oh, and don't forget to get a picture while you're at it so you can share the moment with others. :)

Editing

Post processing is currently being done with iPhoto which offers the basics and a few filter features as well. I usually drop highlights, raise shadows, fine tune the hue and add a touch of saturate if needed although usually it is not if the camera was set to "vivid". Otherwise, a little cropping and levelling as needed does the trick.

In my camera bag

The recently added main man camera is a Pentax K30 with Sigma 10-20 and Pentax 18-135 WR lenses. An assortment of compact travel, action and novelty cameras also come along for the ride usually. These include Panasonic and/or Fuji long zoom compacts, a W3 3D camera, Go Pro Hero and most recently the GoPano lens for the iPhone which allows shooting of viewer controlled 360 degree video (gopano.com).

Feedback

Get out to somewhere beautiful and preferably early morning or late evening as the weather and situation allows. Be prepared to return in darkness though if shooting sunsets off the beaten track! Have fun but stay safe. :)
