We started out the day at Fir Island to see the snow geese. After driving up the Skagit River to Rockport to view the eagles, we returned to Fir Island for sunset. This is exactly the way it looked (very little post processing adjustment).

Behind The Lens

Location

Fir Island, Skagit Valley, Washington

Time

Late dusk

Lighting

When the light is this good, it's pretty hard to mess it up. The colors in this image are pretty much as they appeared.

Equipment

Nikon D-5100, 55-300mm lens at 185mm, f5.0, 1/800 sec, ISO 1600, handheld

Inspiration

The magic of the moment, the beautiful light, the sounds of the honking snow geese, the crisp fall air.

Editing

Minor post-processing in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I've not lightened my equip by moving to the Sony NEX-7 with 18-55mm and 55-240mm lenses. I rarely use a tripod but on occasion will bring along my Manfrotto 190PROXB.

Feedback

Don't quit too early. Sometimes the best light is right before it's completely dark, as in this case. Also, I've found that it's sometimes better to increase your ISO at the expense of a little grain vs. using too low ISO and get blur from subject or camera movement.
