Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo oh a nature hike in a local nature reserve in the suburbs of Chicago, IL. I received my associates in professional digital photography in 2010, which focused mainly on table top and commercial imagery, but have always had a love for nature and the beauty of the untouched. One late fall afternoon, I was hiking through the woods taking pictures of the golden scenery and half naked trees, when I stumbled across a tree lined lake. I was moved by the juxtaposition of the stillness of the lake, with the latent movement of the fallen leaves. There was something serene about how the lake reflected the memory of how the trees looks only a few weeks prior. For me, this image constitutes the transition of fall; somewhere between the vibrancy of summer and the stillness of winter.

Time

This was taken in the late afternoon, just before the sun started to set, so the light was starting to fade, but it wasn't quite golden light. I think this is the best time to photograph nature in the fall, as it brings out the natural ambient light of the fall colors.

Lighting

I wanted to make sure that the darks and lights really contrasted each other in this image, embodying the idea of transition and in-between seasons that represents fall.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 40D, I had a 2.8 50mm lens, no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I loved the idea of reflection in this piece. For me, fall is a time of reflection, be it forward or backwards. I find it's a good time to look back on the year thus far, as well as look forward on the festive season to come. The reflection of the tree trunks interacting with the fallen leaves on the lake really encapsulated this symbolism for me.

Editing

I use lightroom to do my edits, I typically like a lot of contrast in my images and often adjust the saturation, especially in fall imagery. But I try and keep the colors as true to their natural setting as possible to illuminate the real beauty.

In my camera bag

I travel light, and i try and maintain a level of authenticity with my images, so I typically only carry my camera and a couple of lenses.

Feedback

Always be on the look out for the little things. While the whole landscape can be breathtaking, it's typically the details that hold the secrets of the true beauty. Take the time to stop, smell the roses and photograph every detail of that flower.
