Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a hotel in the northern suburbs of Chicago, that I was living in at the time.

Time

This was taken in the evening.

Lighting

It was the middle of winter in the evening, so there was no natural light. I had the blinds / curtains closed to avoid any street lights etc seeping into the shot. I took on of the side table lamps and removed the lamp shade to get a more intense lighting effect. Then I placed it directly to my side to create the shadowed effect.

Equipment

I had my Canon 40D on a tripod, 50mm 2.8F

Inspiration

I had shaved my head for St. Baldricks charity and this was a few days after I had shaved, so the hair had begun to grow back a little. I would sit there and feel the prickly sensation of my hair growing back in and thought, I have to capture this as a photo. I tried to pose in a way that grasped not only that feeling of my hair growing back in, but also the vulnerability of that time of not having hair.

Editing

I usually touch things up with basic light-room edits, adjusting contrast and color for dramatic effect.

In my camera bag

I'm pretty simple, I typically just carry around my canon 40D with a 24-70mm lens.

Feedback

When capturing self-portrait images, I believe the more vulnerable the better. It's about capturing a moment in your life that cannot be expressed with words, but would be a powerful moment if shared with others.
