Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in our home in Adelaide, South Australia. Little Indi was sitting on the back yard lawn

Time

Indi was only 13 weeks old she is a Pure Breed Stafford shire Bull terrier. Every morning I let her out around 8 am and she always ran to the middle of the lawn sat, then she would just look around. So this one morning I got my camera ready let her run out, she sat looking around and I walked up from behind her quickly walked in front of her and snapped the shot. I had to take the photo this way as each other time I tried to walk up to her with the camera it use to scare her and she would run and hide in the garden.

Lighting

This morning was an over cast day but the light was quite bright so it made for a great photo. I had the camera fully open with the lowest F stop to make sure I could take the shot fast. I also knew being so close to my subject I had to make sure I focused on her eyes as quickly as I could as I knew the rest of her would blur out to the back ground quite fast. Plus I knew I would only have one shot at it. Lucky for me there was enough light to capture the shot just right.

Equipment

At the time I took this photo my camera was only a Canon 600D. The lens was a Canon 50mm The settings were IOS 200 F 1.8 Shutter speed 1/500..... I took the shot hand held with no flash.

Inspiration

Indi was our brand new puppy and to tell you the truth I just could no stop taking photos of her. Even today Indi is now 7 years old and She just made the photo of May in the Staffy dogs calendar which is sold world wide. I must have over 6000 photos of her by now.

Editing

Yes I always put my photos into photoshop and clean them up. With this one I didn't do too much processing as most of the photo is blurry because of the low F stop. The most I had to do was just brighten the image up to make the colours come out a bit more. i didn't add colours as I didn't want them to take you eye away from Indi.

In my camera bag

I have cut back on all my equipment, now I only carry my canon camera back pack which holds, My Canon 7D, Sigma 24-105mm art lens, Canon 50mm & a Tokina 11-20mm f2.8 wide angle lens. I have two Wireless flashes which I put on stands with triggers. I carry a light weight sturdy tripod. I also use a portable battery powered Beauty light Godox and 4 foot hexagonal soft box for fashion shoots. That's all the equipment I carry around with me now with sets me up for almost all conditions I want to shoot in.

Feedback

I would say after taking so many photos of my dog as a pup. Be careful of getting too close like I use to do. I use to get up close and take a burst of shot in front of my pup and the shutter noise would get her attention and she would look straight into the camera. The only problem with that was as she got a little older she didn't like the sound and soon as I bought my camera outside she would take off. So I would come up with some other ideas to make them pay attention. Even today if I bring my camera outside she looks at me and runs off. lol They're not silly.. So hope you have fun like I did taking photos of pets & puppies.
