Behind The Lens

Location

I was on the Cedar Island to Ocracoke Ferry in North Carolina which travels on the Palmico Sound which is part of the Outer Banks and there is section of the ferry route that is open to the Atlantic Ocean when I got the shot. I was sitting in my vehicle on the ferry and we were very close to coming into the Cedar Island dock and I was watching the sun and just kept taking a shot every few minutes. I still use film and so I was challenging myself to see if I could get the right moment and composition.

Time

This was as the sun was setting, and the day had been sunny and then the clouds began to gather at dusk. There was some wind as the waters were a bit choppy and we were feeling the wind and water on the ferry with some rocking. There was little humidity in the air that day as it was a fall day. Fall and spring weather was amazing on the coast of North Carolina, weather was wonderful and the evenings were comfortable.

Lighting

I was waiting for the sun to start "sinking" below the waves and to get the color it does in the golden hour of evening and I also wanted to darken the color of the water a bit too.

Equipment

Canon AE-1, with a 70-200 mm lens, didn't use a tripod but instead put the camera on my folded up jacket on the window frame of my truck. I cannot remember the setting but I believe it was 60. I used Fuji 100 film

Inspiration

I was working as a Park Ranger at Cape Lookout National Seashore and I just fell in love with the seashore especially the sunrise and sunsets, they were amazing the colors were so incredible. And especially before and after storms they were stunning and often breath taking. Often times I would go to photograph a sunset and it would be so beautiful I would just sit and watch and forgot to take a picture it was so beautiful. The barrier islands systems were incredible and provided me a wonderful palette to take pictures.

Editing

I just used photoshop to do some cropping, and a touch of contrast and removing a few bits of dust off the slide after I had scanned it.

In my camera bag

I have my AE-1, and A-1 bodies, 24 mm wide angle lens, 20 mm wide angle lens2 macro, 85- 300 mm telephoto lens and filters, Manfratto tripod. I use Fuji 50 and 100 film. I will also take my fish eye lens with me when I shoot around water.

Feedback

One thing I have learned is to sit and watch sunrises and sunsets without shooting just to see the colors and how the sun lights the sky and the effects during different seasons and weather. Just be patient and keep shooting!
