Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Premont,TX at a Benefit roping for a fellow roper named Clay Weeks.

Time

It was about 3 pm. I had just finished helping pushing steers and was already feeling that sunburn from noon to 2 pm. I decided to sit in the stands and snap some more pictures.

Lighting

My camera pretty much doesn't work very well without sunlight. It is really hard to capture high action shots when it is cloudy or the sun has already set.

Equipment

I use a Sony Cybershot. I really want to get better equipment, but it is kind of hard on a college student budget. My mom has a Canon camera, and I love the quality of film;but I have yet to master the action shot without it being blurry.

Inspiration

I love what I do. And I think it shows. When you love doing something, people can tell through the quality of work. I try to photograph people that I know have good horses, that way the pictures are that much more enjoyable.

Editing

I believe I only added a filter. I can't recall which one. I go through them to see which brings out the best of the photo itself.

In my camera bag

I don't really have a bag because I only have one small camera at the moment. It has a built in zoom, all I really have to do is scope out a good spot and I can capture my shots pretty close.

Feedback

I recently watched a video of David Stoecklein, and he said. "I've always felt if you're gonna photograph a subject, you should know the subject." What he said is just spot on. I focus my efforts on things I love and things I know. And of course I know there is money in being a portrait photographer(graduations, weddings, new babies), but I don't love that and there are way too many people already doing that where I live. If I were to do pictures of that nature, my work wouldn't be as good. I don't have an eye for stuff like that. So, I would say, love what you photograph and be familiar with it.
