Behind The Lens

Location

This is my daughter Airis Alanna. I took this photo of her in my friend's studio in Shah Alam, Malaysia.

Time

It's about 3pm in the afternoon.

Lighting

I use 4 lights setup for this picture. Using Beautydish as Main Light, two strobe on both side with strip softbox and a snoot at the back of my daughter. With a reflector front below.

Equipment

This photo shot with my Nikon D700 mounted on a tripod. And a reflector.

Inspiration

I was trying to create "Jill Greenberg's Crying Kids" style with my daughter. I love to capture the true emotion in Portraits. And finally I got what I want and to be honest, I think it looks better.

Editing

Usually I will shoot in RAW and post-processing using Adobe Photoshop CS5. Using Dodge tool for the highlights area and Burn tool for the midtone. A few layer of Color Balance mask to get the correct skin tone.

In my camera bag

I always pack my faithful Nikon D700 with sigma 35mm f1.4 art lens. I also will bring along Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 and Sigma 24mm f1.8.

Feedback

If you have to capture something similar, learn from the expert. Practice and practice a lot to make it even better from the original. You are the artist and you yourself have to capture and create your own signature art. Keep on learning and be humble.
