Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from Haleiwa Beach Park, overlooking Waialua Bay in Oahu, Hawaii while on vacation with my family.

Time

On the way back from eating dinner in Haleiwa, I noticed how beautiful the sunset was and stopped at the first park I could find, Haleiwa Beach Park. I could see a sailboat and kayakers approaching each other from opposite sides of the bay and waited until both subjects came into view. At 7:05 PM, everything came into line as the sun shone from behind the clouds.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the beams of sunlight protruding from behind the glowing clouds while also capturing the kayakers and sailboat on the water to fill some of the space and give the photo an added depth. After several attempts of accurately capturing the colors and light I saw, I took this photo with ISO-100, f-8, and the shutter speed at 1/100th of a second.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Canon Rebel T2i and an 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

I planned to stay on the beach until nightfall in hopes of capturing my dream photo of a green flash, the optical phenomenon that occurs just before sunrise or after sunset when the conditions are perfect over water. I unfortunately wasn't able to experience the flash as the clouds moved in on the horizon, but in the meantime, I was taking photos of the absolutely beautiful Hawaiian sunset. This photo was my favorite of the set.

Editing

I edited this photo using Adobe Lightroom. I made the photo a little more vibrant to accentuate the golden tones of the sunset and I slightly increased the contrast and sharpness to make the photo pop.

In my camera bag

At the time, when I was still using a bag for my camera gear, I would carry around my Canon Rebel T2i, 18-55mm lens, and a Vivitar Zoom Thyristor 3500 flash. Since then, I've vastly expanded upon my gear. I now keep my equipment in a Pelican 1550 case. In it, I have the same T2i and a new 18-55mm, fisheye, and a 75-300mm lens, a GoPro Hero3+, a Yongnuo YN-560 II and a YN-560 III Speedlite, a CyberSync transmitter with three receivers, an AlienBees B400 Flash Unit and a lithium generator to power it, and two Gary Fong Lightspheres.

Feedback

Hawaii, like any island, is great for capturing sunrises and sunsets. With less than an hour drive from one side of Oahu to the other, you can take a sunrise and sunset picture over the ocean on the same day. It rains for roughly thirty minutes to an hour every afternoon like clockwork, so you can time your photo expeditions around it. Landscape and seascape photography is a waiting game. Sometimes you'll wait hours for the right conditions, but the patience will definitely pay off.
