Location
The photo was taken close to my house. Our neighborhood has had a family of cranes that live here and have offspring every summer. I don't see the young until they are a little older than this, but a few years back, I got a photo of this one getting fed. We usually get one chick or colt, but sometimes we get 2.Time
I take off for the grounds whenever someone says the young chick is out....Lighting
For these type of shots you have to sneak up to the birds, and using a telephoto lens take a lot of shots until you are able to get a good one with available lighting.Equipment
I used a Pnetax Camera and 3-- mm lens for this shot.Inspiration
I love nature shots, especially in the spring with young life emerges.Editing
Photoshop and Lightroom for everything I do. I like to shoot wide and crop in... Especially on shots out in the "wild". Shooting wider in the shot gives me more ability to crop.In my camera bag
I carry circular polarizers filters and a wide angle lens. I usually have a lens already on the camera that goes to 300 mm. Always have cleaning cloths for dust that happens more outside than inside. I also have a double sided lens cleaning pen that has a dust removal brush on one side and a special non-liquid cleaning element on the other side. Also, spare SD cards and batteries.Feedback
Dusk is my favorite time to shoot, just before the light starts to get dark. However with nature shots, it can be anytime of day. I watch for the lighting and clouds in the sky and hopefully it will turn in my favor. Animals can appear anytime so just be prepared and have your camera handy. That means, battery charged and a pretty empty SD card in the camera and the camera settings ready for your time of day and lighting.
