Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the annual City of Santa Fe 4th of July pancake breakfast and car show.

Time

Well this photo was taken after I stuffed myself full of pancakes and decided to take a stroll through the vintage car show, so I would say somehwere around noon.

Lighting

Well it was a bright and warm summer day, so luckily the sun was pretty much straight over head so there wasn't too many shadows to deal with.

Equipment

I used a Nikon 1 J1, with a 1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

Inspiration

I have always had a love for automobiles and the small details that they contain. Normally as you walk through a car show it is extremely difficult to get a good photo of an entire car, so I decided to start shooting closely at emblems and small details up close and from multiple angles to achieve the look I was going for.

Editing

I normally shoot in RAW, because there is no degradation in the quality as you edit. I typically use Snapseed for a majority of my editing, on this photo I used the HDR Scape to bring out some of the details and the I converted the image to black and white, and the some subtle adjustments to achieve the look you see.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry my Nikon 1 J1 and an extra battery, pretty simple setup.

Feedback

Practice, practice, and more practice. Get up close to the vehicles learn the lines and contours. See what sticks out to you, it may be a logo, a paint job, or just a shiny piece of chrome. Keep experimenting with multiple angles and just shoot and enjoy yourself!
