Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Stratford Park, Stratford Ontario. We were out and about for a Sunday Drive and happened upon Stratford - while visiting the park I saw a collection of ducks near the water - as we approached they approached - the rest was a true photo opportunity!

Time

This image was just a luck of the draw - I just happened to bring along my camera and it was an early afternoon on a blustery cold March day - my hope was to get some shots of the ducks in the water but they had other ideas - they wanted to meet us on the bank of the water and one by one they came to us - it was kind of humbling as there was no fear on their part and I could crouch closer that I expected to.

Lighting

As the wintery sky was overcast there were no issues with bright sunshine - the natural light of the snow highlighted the scene and allowed for a low ISO. This allowed me to capture not only the natural beauty of the flying duck but also the essence of the cold with the background snow.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5D mark III with a 24-105 Canon EF lens - hand held with no flash - Crouching in the cold snow allowed me to capture the flight coming in.

Inspiration

The serene scenery of the wintery park offered a great background to showcase the ducks in their timely natural habitat. The ability to get so close with no fear on their part allowed me to really look for shots I could create . As I started to take close ups I saw more ducks flying in to join the party - it really reminded me of an airport scene where planes where lined up for landing - here it was one duck at a time.

Editing

I am an aspiring amateur post processing is using either iPhoto or in this case Aperture - I adjusted the contrast and white balance slightly - I really try and use the camera to capture the image as I want to avoid complicated post processing which I need to learn and is my next step in this amazing photographic journey.

In my camera bag

I like to carry what I call my lucky Trilogy - 24 - 105 Canon for every day all around shooting - 70 - 200 Canon EF 4.0 for telephoto shots and my favourite 150 mm Sigma 2.8 Macro lens for any close ups or any portrait shots - heavy bag but I feel like i don't want to miss any shot. As an amateur what I keep including in my bag is my tripod for the shots I thought I had covered - well worth the effort - especially if your are travelling.

Feedback

I am an aspiring amateur photographer - every shot is a learning experience , there are more shots discarded than are considered as keepers. If we did not have the ability to shoot what we thought was amazing ,creative or stunning then we would have quit a long time ago.. we are here to see, inspire , be creative ,work together and understand each other, help each other. To me View Bug has been an amazing porthole to the future of photography - I have experienced amazing photos , learning opportunities , and support , there is so much talent on this site to learn from and get inspired from.
