Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Barcelona. I was just wandering around with my camera when the blue motorcycle caught my eye down a laneway so I went over to take a pic and then saw the guy standing against the wall on his 'phone with his foot up against the wall and just took a quick shot.

Time

The photo was taken around midday, the light was very strong, not ideal, but I did not want to miss the shot so just fired away.

Lighting

The sunlight was pretty strong, not the ideal time to be taking shots, but as this was just something I came upon I went with it. Sometimes you just have to work with what you are given.

Equipment

Nikon D300. No tripod with me (I never take one on holiday even though I suppose I should). Equipment weight is always an issue when travelling.

Inspiration

I liked the look of the motorcycle so went over to take a shot of it but then on turning down the laneway I saw the guy on his 'phone with one leg up against the wall and loved the way the light was shining on one side of his face. I just liked the look of the whole scene.

Editing

I tried to tone down the blown highlights in Photoshop . I also gave a little saturation to the blue motorcycle.

In my camera bag

Normally when I have an assignment I carry my Nikon D610 along with my D300 as a back-up. I would normally have two to three lenses with me, an 70 - 200 2.8 and my trusty 24 - 70 2.8. I usually throw in my nifty fifty as well (love that little lens). While travelling I make do with one lens which is usually my 70 - 200 as I like to travel as light as possible.

Feedback

Well as I said above this was a scene I just happened upon but if I were to set it up I would choose a different time of day, probably more towards evening time. I would probably move the motorcycle down the lane with the mirrors facing the guy so as to capture his reflection in it. I would probably use off camera flash in the background and a little fill light on his face.
