Great perspective of this ocean of red. Congrats on the award. It is certainly deserved.

Location
This photo was taken at Table Cape on Tasmania's north west coast where an annual Tulip Festival is held. The local tulip growers open their patches for viewing in the weeks leading up to and following the festival. The fields are rotated every year and while often the paddocks can easily be viewed while driving in the area, on this occasion they were in an enclosed section not visible from the road. Many photographers travel from various parts of the country to capture the impressive display and I ventured out early on the Monday morning following the festival weekend to try and avoid the crowds.Time
I usually like to embark on photography ventures before sunrise although access to the tulips was dictated by opening hours. This image was taken a few hours after sunrise on October 14, 2013 at 8.45am.Lighting
It was a very grey day and although the tulips created their own riot of colour the sky was rather nondescript. When photographing landscapes, where possible, I will shoot a sequence of 3 images with different exposures using the exposure compensation/AEB setting on the Canon to give options in post processing. This was the first sequence of images for the day and I was happy to capture the clouds doing their own little dance in this composition.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 60D, a 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 lens with a circular polarising filter, a cable release and a tripod.Inspiration
The tulips are planted in rows according to their variety and I wanted to take advantage of the beautiful display of colour. As I first walked into the paddock, from this angle, I was struck by the expansive field and how pretty it was looking down the length of the rows. It was not the image I was thinking I wanted but it was the one that stood out amongst the others and effectively captured the day.Editing
I always shoot in raw, so I can get the best out of each image and enjoy playing around with post-processing. This is a merging of a 3-image sequence using HDR processing with adjustments made to contrast, brightness, hue and tone.In my camera bag
In my bag is a Canon 6D camera with a 24-105mm f/4 lens on it most of the time, it's my go to for everything and has served me well. I have a circular polarising filter, a variable ND filter and a cable release for when I'm set up on a tripod. I also carry Canon 50mm f/1.4 and 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO lenses for the occasions when I feel I need to use them. Currently the 50mm lives on the camera which is great for being be a bit more inconspicuous when out in a crowd. I don't usually have a strap on the camera but when I do need to use one its a Black Rapid sling camera strap that is also in the bag.Feedback
The images we create are dictated by time, place, space and light, in a place like Tasmania, where all four seasons can be experienced in one day, these elements are very changeable. Any composition we envision may not be the one we end up with and we may well have to come back another day to get the one we want. In the event that you only have one opportunity, then experiment and make the most of what is presented before you and enjoy the process.
