Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken during an afternoon ballet class in an old community dance hallTime
Late afternoonLighting
The lighting was challenging in this venue, with few windows and a lot of old clutter around the walls as well, which was not visually pleasing. there was one doorway where the afternoon sun filtered through and this was the spot I chose.Equipment
A Canon 7D camera, 50mm 1.8 prime lens, hand held and no flashInspiration
This taken during an 8 month period when I followed this senior dance class, at weekly classes, outdoor performances and their final dress rehearsal. I try to set myself a project each year which will challenge me to learn new skills and also have a fun result for the community. In this case I produced a photo book for the students and ballet school.Editing
This shot was changed to black and white, cropped in close and angled slightly to focus on the detail in the ballet shoes. In my camera bag
I normally carry either my Canon 7D or Canon 5D Mark 111 camera bodies ; depending on what my subject matter is. I also select my lenses to cater. Six months of the year I primarily photograph yacht racing, so I use a Canon 100-400 mm f/4 lens on the water with a Think Tank Rain cover or I may take the 7D for a change and combine it with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. I have just started photographing Barbie dolls for a new project I am doing so I am having fun with a 60mm f/2,8 Macro lens at present. I always have a 500mm f/1,8 prime lens as a standby as well. I also carry an ND filter and a set of graduated filters for fun on the chance a good landscape shot at sunset or sunrise may occur.Feedback
Persistence and practise are the two things I believe you need. I set myself challenges and small projects and also re visit at different times of the day if possible.,
