Location
Seattle, WashingtonTime
Evening time, around dinner. This was Thanksgiving Weekend right after the tree lighting ceremony in downtown Seattle.Lighting
It rained all day so the streets were wet. I thought all the holiday lights in the trees, the store lights in the windows, and the reflection on the wet pavement set an interesting mood. And the streets were closed due to the tree lighting festival so not having car headlights to deal with was great!Equipment
This was a shot I took with my iPhone 4s, no flash.Inspiration
We were all walking down the middle of the street after the tree lighting ceremony and I was enjoying the holiday lights. Most of the crowds had already dispersed. This couple walked by me keeping under their umbrella and with most people on the sidewalks, they caught my attention. When I turned around to catch them walking away, the whole street scene was incredible and set the mood for the evening and I knew I had to photograph it and quickly.Editing
This photo was originally in color but I thought that was a bit distracting. I really wanted the white holiday lights to show up more and for the couple to be a silhouette, so I converted this to black-and-white in Photoshop and tweaked the levels. Also did some cropping to get some people in the foreground out of the picture. In my camera bag
If I'm heading out with the goal of taking pictures, I carry a bag with a Nikon SLR, a zoom lens, a wide-angle lens, a flash, and tripod. In this case, I was keeping lightweight since I spent the day walking around the city. So I carried a point-and-shoot (Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20) in a small case with a D-clip clipped to my jeans, and my iPhone in my back pocket. That way, I was hands-free most of the day and had quick access to two cameras as needed.Feedback
Always watch your surroundings, find scenes that set the mood, and take the shot. Don't worry about what equipment to use or whether everything is perfect. If you don't take photos, you won't know if your photos will end up being good. And make sure to look behind you. This was the street I just walked down and it was more interesting at the end when I looked back than it was when I was walking down it.
