Location
This photo was taken in Shenandoah National Park. Interestingly, we were there with our wedding photographer to take engagement photos. I brought my camera too, and while the fog wasn't ideal for portraits, it made for fun shooting on the grounds.Time
It was late afternoon in the early spring. Autumn leaves are still on ground but trees are just starting to leaf and tiny buds were growing.Lighting
I wanted to draw the eye in, down the path, focus on the oddly shaped tree and then wonder what mysteries lay blanketed beyond. I framed the photo to provide a tunnel to the light.Equipment
This image was captured handheld with a Nikon D80.Inspiration
The wetness of the woods darkened the tree trunks and the fog added a perfect veil of magic. I love woods & forests and all that they inspire in our imaginations. I included the path to keep the image inviting and less haunting. Some people find woods to be scary places, but I wanted to share the feeling of being welcomed in to explore.Editing
In the image as-shot, the fog captured and held a lot of the light, so I bumped the "fill light" way down in Lightroom to remove glare. In my camera bag
My Nikon D80 with an 18-200mm lens is my tried-and-true.Feedback
My best advice for an image like this is to always make the best of what seems like a bad situation. Our expectation was a beautiful sunny afternoon in the mountains, much like we envisioned for our wedding. But the fog was my fortune for some moody, evocative images. Also, you never know when you might get lucky. This is by far my most "liked" photo on ViewBug which always makes me chuckle a little, since I thought the day would be a bust.
