Behind The Lens

Location

For a time I worked as a street trader selling my photos in Derry in Northern Ireland. Jimmy is a street drinker & he would always stop & chat. I asked if I could take his photo & I loved the results

Time

It was taken around mid day

Lighting

It was a typical day here not too bright, cloudy so I didn't have to worry about sun affecting the eyes

Equipment

I took this with my Nikon D300s with 24-70 lens. Hand held with no flash

Inspiration

Jimmys eyes did it for me, coupled with his beard. The years on the street is clear in his eyes

Editing

I always tend to shoot in colour then convert to B&W for this I used photoshop & layers, converted to B&W & then brought back the colour in his eyes. I then put it through Nik HDR to help emphasis the lines in his face

In my camera bag

I started with my D90 & now I have the D300s & D3x, as for lens I have 50mm 1:4, 24-70 2:8, 180m 2:8 & a 2x converter. SP600 & SP900 that's my lot

Feedback

Getting a willing subject is half the battle, I always prefer natural light although with lighting you have more control. Always try to get the subject to relax & to be as natural as possible. Chat to them crack some jokes anything & always keep looking through the viewfinder, I would tend to shoot in continuous mode . I hope that this has been of some help & thanks for all your kind comments
