Location
I took this on vacation in Charleston, South Carolina during the winter, it was pretty cold out there. Was taken on the battery overlooking the water.Time
This is probably one of my favorite images. I remember waking up around 5 AM and walking a good distance to the battery in the cold. Had no tripod so I tried to balance the camera on the battery railing as best I could due to the slow shutter speed. It was one of the best mornings I can remember, walking around in the cold and looking out toward the water while garbage trucks were making their rounds before everyone woke up. I literally had no idea it would ever wind up on a major website. This was taken on January 21, 2013 at 7:53 AM.Lighting
I usually shoot on manual to capture landscapes...for this I just waited until the sky was starting to get interesting over the water.Equipment
My old travel camera - Canon Rebel T3 along with an ultra-wide angle lens, the metadata says 10mm, so it was a Simga 10-24mm which is designed for the APS-C (crop sensor) models. Unfortunately I had no tripod because I left it back at the hotel so I ended up balancing it on a handrail and holding my breath in the cold air. It took a few shots until I was happy with the results. The metadata says it was done at ISO 100, f/13, exposure 10/1.Inspiration
The usual photo bug syndrome I think every photographer has - they want to go somewhere and capture something they haven't done before and try different things. I'm always trying to do new things.Editing
Yes I did actually, I did some post work in Photoshop layers mainly adjusting exposure/vibration/saturation and added a glow like effect. In my camera bag
Depends, my work cameras are a Canon 5DIII and 5DII, but all my personal stuff is done with a Canon 6D, which I prefer because it's lighter weight and costs less. I use a variety of lenses, all Canon: 17-40 f/4 L, 24-105 f/4L IS, 35 f/2 IS, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, and a 70-200 f/4L IS. Also use some Paul C. Buff strobes and Canon 600EX-RT Speedlites with the transmitter, which sometimes I sync together.Feedback
Yes for this one I would suggest to practice different shutter speeds and learn more about layering techniques in Photoshop or Lightroom. Also practice shooting in manual mode. Thanks so much Viewbug, it's a real honor!
