Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a road trip from Christchurch to Queenstown in New Zealand. Lake Pukaki has stunning views of Mt Cook, the tallest mountain in New Zealand, at the head of the lake. It was a stunning day so when we stopped, I ran off with my camera!

Time

Early afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting was tricky. As you can see, the sun was blazing through a hazy day. I was trying to get the clearest pictures possible as I had left my filters at home!

Equipment

Just my Canon Camera for these shots.

Inspiration

Driving through the stunning New Zealand scenery. I wanted something to remind me of my stunning home on a rainy day. I love the natural blue hues in Lake Pukaki.

Editing

This shot was actually made from three photos, stitched together in Photoshop. As this is a popular tourist stop, there were also lots of people down by the edge of the lake. On this occasion, I chose to edit them out of the picture. I also added a filter in photoshop to help with the hazy light and bumped up the saturation to bring out the brilliant blue of the lake through the haze.

In my camera bag

Always spare batteries! I have a portable flash and two lenses.

Feedback

Sometimes, you can wait months for the right light to capture an image at this lake. Sometimes it’s worth giving it a go even when conditions aren’t quite what you want. You never know what stunning image you may end up with when you look at things from a different angle.
